Behind The Flame: What Goes Into a Quality Flat Roof Installation

When most people look at a finished roof, they see a clean, sealed surface protecting their building. What they don’t see is the precision, experience, and attention to detail that goes into every step of the installation.

Two workers in hardhats and high-visibility jackets use torches to apply roofing material on a sunny day. Flames are visible on the surface.

This photo captures one of those critical moments during a flat roof installation.

Torch-applied roofing systems require both skill and control. At first glance, it might look simple: apply heat, roll the material, and move on. In reality, it’s a carefully coordinated process that demands training, awareness, and consistency.

Precision Matters

In a torch-on system, heat is used to activate the underside of the membrane so it properly adheres to the surface below. Too little heat, and the bond won’t hold. Too much heat, and you risk damaging the material—or worse, creating a safety hazard.

That’s why every movement matters.

Safety Is Always First

Working with open flame on a rooftop comes with real risks. That’s why strict safety procedures are always followed:

  • Proper spacing and coordination between workers

  • Fire extinguishers and fire watch protocols on site

  • Regular equipment checks (including propane systems and hoses)

  • Trained and experienced crew members only

At A&K Construction, these aren’t just “check-the-box” items—they’re part of how we operate every day. A safe site is a productive site, and more importantly, it protects our team and our clients’ property.

Built to Last

A properly installed roof offers excellent durability, waterproofing, and long-term performance—especially in Ontario’s climate, where buildings face everything from heavy snow loads to extreme temperature swings.

But the system is only as good as the installation.

That’s why we focus on:

  • Consistent application techniques

  • Proper seam bonding

  • Attention to detail at edges, penetrations, and transitions

  • Ongoing training and quality control

More Than Just a Roof

At the end of the day, a roof isn’t just another part of your building—it’s what protects everything underneath it.

Our goal is simple: do the job right the first time, and build something you can rely on.

Because when it comes to roofing, trust isn’t built from words—it’s built from the work.
